Paul Bernstein

Devoted and loving husband of Irma, Paul Bernstein passed away at age 92. He is survived by his son, Jay Bernstein; daughter, Lisa Hum; adored granddaughters, Julia & Eleni. He is predeceased by his son-in-law, Stephen Hum.

During World War II, he served in the Corps of Engineers. Irma & Paul met at Temple University and have been married 70 years. He & Irma were active community members in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania and chaired the Kennedy campaign in Clinton County, Pennsylvania in 1960. He came to RIT in 1966, where he served as Dean of Liberal Arts (1966 – 1976) and Dean of Graduate Studies (1976 – 1992). Later he taught International Business from 1993 to 2003.

Dr. Bernstein earned his B.S. and M.S. from Temple University, and he was awarded a Ph.D in European History from the University of Pennsylvania in 1955. Numerous articles resulted from his research in Sweden. Dr. Bernstein also co-authored two volumes on The History of Western Civilization, a book on American Work Values (1997), Career Education and Quality of Working Life (1980) and a book called Letters to Eleanor: Voices of the Great Depression (2004).

He served as RIT’s liaison with the New York State Education Department, and was instrumental in getting RIT’s first doctorate (Imaging Science) approved by the State Education Department.

Paul loved baseball and football and was a devoted supporter of the Buffalo Bills.

Funeral services will be held on SUNDAY at 10:30 AM at All Seasons Chapel at White Haven Memorial Park (210 Marsh Road in Pittsford, NY). Interment, White Haven Memorial Park. Following the funeral those who wish may go to the Gathering Room for light refreshments in the All Seasons Chapel at White Haven Memorial Park from 11:30 AM – 1:30 PM. Shiva will be observed at 1 Linden Cove in Pittsford on Sunday from 4:00 – 6:00 PM and Monday from 5:00 – 7:00 PM. Donations may be made to Sloan-Kettering Memorial Cancer Center in Paul’s memory.
