Obituary of Dr. Stephen I. Rosenfeld

Passed away on August 18, 2019 at age 80 surrounded by his family in his home overlooking beautiful Keuka Lake. He is predeceased by his parents, Murray and Anita Rosenfeld, and granddaughter, Sara Hertafeld. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Elise; devoted sons, Scott (Karrie Knickerbocker) and David (Viva) Rosenfeld; beloved grandchildren, Seasson and Aria Rosenfeld,Rhys (Siena) Hertafeld,  Evan, Sydney, Kalina, Jack and Zara Hertafeld, Michael Dominguez, Taylor Knickerbocker, and Ty and Zoe Bosanic; his sister, Linda (Tom) Genega; and many nieces and nephews.

Stephen grew up in the Bronx and earned both his Bachelor’s (‘59) and MD (‘63) degrees from the University of Rochester, where he went on to have a distinguished career as a physician, researcher, teacher, administrator and author. In addition, his passion for music and nature led him to serve as a founding Board member and president of the Finger Lakes Chamber Music Festival and on the Boards of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO), the Rochester Oratorio Society (ROS), The Nature Conservancy of Central and Western New York, and the Rochester Birding Association. As dedicated as he was to his career and these causes, Stephen was happiest spending time with his family and traveling with his wife Elise.

Funeral Services will be held on SUNDAY, August 25, 2019 at 11 AM at Temple Sinai (363 Penfield Road - CLICK HERE FOR DIRECTIONS), followed by interment at White Haven Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends on MONDAY at The Summit at Brighton (2000 Summit Circle Dr., Rochester- CLICK FOR DIRECTIONS) from 2-4 PM and at Temple Sinai (363 Penfield Road - CLICK HERE FOR DIRECTIONS) from 7-9 PM.  

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the RPO (Link), the ROS (Link), the Wilmot Cancer Center for pancreatic cancer research (Link), or The Nature Conservancy of Central and Western New York (Link).
