Susan Patricia (Spitulnik) Platt, 78 of Rochester, NY passed away very suddenly late Thursday night, August 20. She was the wife of Allen A. Platt who was deeply devoted to her.
She was born in Hornell, NY on January 31, 1942 to the late Sol J. and the late Florence (Legumsky) Spitulnik. In a gesture humor, her Father paid for Susan’s birth with a 28-pound sack of copper pennies like how he’d paid the Doctor for her older brother the late Jerry E. Spitulnik’s birth. The story was so cute, it made the local paper.
Susan was an incredibly giving and generous person who never hesitated to offer her assistance to her family or friends. She loved her entire family very much but had a deeply and profound love for her two grandchildren. Her innumerable gifts of kindness, care and comfort will be severely missed.
Susan grew up in Towanda, PA. She spent the summer of 1950 with her Uncle and Aunt in Rochester, NY as a bit of a vacation. Susan would go to Charlotte Beach on Lake Ontario with her Mother’s brother Julian Legumsky, who was a Beach Lifeguard at the time. She loved telling us stories of the fun she had and that if she behaved for her Uncle, there was strong possibility he might get them an Abbots Frozen Custard as a treat. To this day, getting an Abbots still held a special place in her heart from those beautiful memories. In her late teens and early twenties, she attended College at the Rochester Business Institute in Rochester, NY where she met Allen during a double date. According to Allen, it only took till there second date for him to realize Susan was the woman he wanted to marry and several months later, after asking her Father for her hand in marriage were engaged and married on July 3, 1962 in Rochester, NY. After having two children, she felt the need to help contribute to the family income and sold Tupperware where she quickly arose as a top seller in the Rochester area. Not wanting her children to be left out of the excitement, she was quick to teach them the “I’m a Tupperware Lady” song that every Tupperware salesperson must know. In the early 1970’s Susan became a School Bus Driver for the Penfield Central School District for almost 30-years, where she made it to the honored position of number One Driver just before retirement. Driving School bus was a difficult job that she deeply loved; requiring her to get up well before dawn and of course dealing with both the great and not so great kids. Her favorite part however was always the kids. Many of which she transported through out their entire time from Kindergarten through Graduation. To her delight, some of those children eventually had families of their own and she had the honor to transport them to school as well. Those second-generation children became her second family in a way and to this day, most still send her birthday cards and bring her tins of the yummiest treats during the holidays.
Susan’s family was everything to her. In the 1970’s she and Allen purchased their first Pop-Up Tent Camper with the hope of giving their family cherished memories. The trips went all over, often bringing her Mother Florence along or some of her cousin’s families to make it even more memorable. Susan and Allen had been bitten by the camping bug. As her children grew older and left home, they never quit going camping; but now with a lot more luxury in a large Motorhome that had every amenity. Together they would spend most of their summers and early Fall for about the next 12 years, enjoying their favorite campground in Canandaigua, NY which they considered their summer home. There they developed a huge number of close and treasured friends that were part of Summer family.
Besides her Husband of 58 years, she leaves behind two children; William R. Platt and Linda E. Platt both of Rochester, NY, Her two grandchildren; Emily L. (Platt) Casello and her husband Paul (PJ) Casello of Worcester, MA, and Sol F.B. Platt of Rochester, NY. She also leaves behind a sister in law Lois Spitulnik of Woodstock, MD, a late brother in law Bertram Platt of Rochester, NY along with several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Her very large paternal and maternal family will also deeply miss her presence.
Due to the current pandemic, the services will be private. Susan will be buried next to her parents in Towanda, PA at the Oak Hill Cemetery.
