Obituary of Louis M. Karpel

Passed away on Sunday, October 28, 2012, at 92 years of age. Predeceased by his beloved wife, Phyllis, parents Max and Celia, brother Ben, and sisters Ethel and Rose. Survived by his children Barry (Joyce) Karpel of New Port Richey, FL, Pamela (Stuart) Gluckman of Mendon, Gale (Stephen) Scherer of Pittsford, and granddaughter Jenna Scherer of New York City; sister-in-law, Jeanne Hurwitz. Lou proudly served his country as a lieutenant in the United States Army during World War II. He owned and operated homes for mentally disabled adults, and patented the “Heimlich Helper" medical device. He was a champion handball player. Lou will be remembered as a devoted husband and father, and a caring friend. We will never forget our Dad’s devoted friends, Bill Opperman and Judy Dreesen. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Michelle Sterman, PA and the nurses and staff of the 3rd floor, East Wing of FF Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua for the compassionate care and support that they gave to our Dad and our family. All are invited to attend his funeral service, TUESDAY, 12 NOON in the All Seasons Chapel at White Haven Memorial Park (Map to Cemetery). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Lustgarten Foundation (Visit Lustgarten Website) for Pancreatic Cancer Research.
