Obituary of Murray Rubenstein
Murray Rubenstein
After a prolonged illness. Survived by Honora, his wife of 64 years; sons Jeffrey (Jacqueline) and Ronald (Andrea); grandchildren Matthew, Emily, Gavriel, and Adina; sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Murray was born in Brooklyn, NY, the youngest of his family's seven brothers. After the early deaths of his parents, he lived at the Brooklyn Hebrew Orphan Asylum (BHOA), where he made life-long friends and, as a teen, organized and managed a traveling basketball team. After high school, Murray worked while studying accounting at the City College of New York. During World War II, he served as a Supply Sergeant in Roberts Field, Liberia. After the war, Murray finished college on the GI Bill. He believed that "educating an entire generation was the smartest thing the government ever did." He lived at the 92nd Street Young Men's Hebrew Association (The Y) in Manhattan, where he worked part time in the check room, served as a club leader for teenage boys, and began playing tennis--a sport he continued to play competitively well into his 80s.
Murray became a Certified Public Accountant and worked for several CPA firms. In the 1950s, he, Honora, and her brother and sister-in-law Harold and Leona Burger started (and then ran for 13 years) Camp Jened, the first summer camp for handicapped children and adults. In the 1970s, Murray became comptroller and vice president of the Chicago Markets supermarket chain in Utica, NY, the job from which he eventually retired. Murray served for many years as treasurer of the Utica Symphony Orchestra and was also active on committees at Utica's Temple Emanu-El. He was always available to mentor young businessmen and to give a kind smile or hand to anyone who needed it. He enjoyed following the stock market, playing bridge and tennis with his sons, and introducing his grandchildren to tennis.
The family would like to thank the staffs of The Highlands at Brighton and Clare Bridge of Perinton for their loving and respectful care.
