Bob Malinoff 5/20/08
I am certain that all of Bob’s friends gathered here today join me in offering our sincerest/deepest and most heartfelt sympathetic condolences to his family, Carol and Mary Lee, sister Shelley and the children Jody, Debra, Jennifer and Christine their spouses and grandchildren too numerous and too cute to mention.
I first met Bob in where you would probably most likely find him and that was the fitness center (RAC). After seeing him and recognizing for several mornings (6 am) he sauntered over, offered his hand introduced himself and asked if we could be workout partners-just like that. Off course I said yes- who could resist this guy with the beaming smile from ear to ear, a positive and welcoming glow. Bob was a real people person and his smile and that famous wink just let you know he was very happy to see you and that you were a special friend.
Little did I know that our friendship was the beginning of a very interesting and consciousness expanding experience for me.
Bob drank deeply from the fountain of life, he wanted to experience it all , to constantly learn and to find the truth. The truth was out there somewhere and Bob was going to find it be it and be the best at anything that captivated his interests. -Be they investing or physical training or his myriad other interests. If it had not been for Bob dragging Carol, Shirley and me to a two day investools investing seminar I might still believe that the way to make a small fortune in the stock market was to start out with a large one.
And as for physical training we were always exploring Bob’s latest and greatest ideas: the Russian Spetznatz commando workout (one 500 lb squat)- but suppose we could only do 3/7 th of one, we would wind up looking like Toulouse Latrec, or the Antonio Sobatis celebrity workout doing hundreds of repetitions- we weren’t going to be movie stars so we gave that up before or arms gave out. So Bob would always come up with these ideas, some of them off the wall and I would point out that since they violate d all three laws of thermodynamics we should not try them out.
Probably the best literal and metaphoric example I could imagine to describe Bob Mailnoff is sailing and here Oliver Wendel Holmes offers some appropriate words
“ Greatness is not in where we stand, but in what direction we are moving, We must sail, sometimes with the wind and sometimes against it. – But we must sail and not drift nor lie at anchor.”
No one could ever accuse Bob of lying at anchor – even though he and I tried unsuccessfully 3 times to cross lake Ontario to go to Toronto- eventually we just drove there.
He loved photography, and jazz (went to concerts), he got us involved in yoga (we spent a weekend at to the Omega yoga Institute at Rheinbeck on the Hudson and sweated for four hours at time in a 95F heated room-that weekend nearly killed us and then we got killed again when our wives learned about the co-ed nude steam room.
Bob love bicycling. One morning on the occasion of someones marriage, we all dressed up in black tie, stripped leotards and cumberbuns and went riding out and about eventually down clover street crossing Monroe Avenue- and I just remember all those 7:30 am motorists looks at all of us in surprise wondering where the wedding was and why everyone was bicycling to it.
Above all I remember how proud he was of his daughters and how much he loved his family and cherished the grandchildren. We went to Music Time at the Eastman together.
And then about 5 years ago pretty close to this time Bob had his fateful motorcycle accident. It was a miracle that he survived. I remember how all our friends from Midtown Athletic, the infamous Table IA group who used to throw these wonderful get togethers, rotating at each others house helped Bob recover. These people rallied around Bob to visit him, bring flowers, help with his physical training you know who you are: Chris Rybchck, Kathleen, Al, Mark Maves, Ned Freeman, Laura, Susan, Richard, Paul M, Carl Steinbrenner, Joe Noto and how Margaret Ecklund and Stephan took special care of Bob – how we had to fight off the nurses bringing Bob Boost (loaded with carbs) and said no no he needs protein not carbs, so we would sneak him protein shakes ).
Bob got better and came back to Midtown, resumed riding in spinning class and did more lower body work- I would get up at 4:30 am to pick him up and after work out he would go to physical therapy located there in the gym.
I don’t know who said this, if it was not Hemmingway it should have been “the world breaks everyone eventually, but some people emerge stronger at the broken places”
That was Bob, he was a real Mencsh and had a wonderful wife Carol to support him.
Finally a little over a year ago, he had the stroke that left him without the use of his limbs.
And I wonder why, why do bad things happen to good people. Each of us has his or her own answer- I prefer to believe that bad things happen to bad people also and that the universe is benignly indifferent to our situation- it is a mirror that allows us to discover our real character for adversity does not build character it reveals it.
Let me end with a poem which I feel captures the essence of our beloved friend Bob Malinoff loving husband, father, grandfather. “Invictus” by William Ernest Henley
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be,
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years,
Finds, and shall fine me, unafraid.
It matters not how straight the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.
Thank you all for coming here today to honor this great man, Bob Malinoff.

Bob and I first met back in 1980 when we were dock mates on Lake Ontario. Bob taught me much about sailing, as he was truly a very young "old salt". We shared much over the years that followed, and as his attorney, I was able to be there for Bob as he had always been there for me. Bob was the definition of a true "gentle man", and his warm genuine smile and extension of sincere friendship will never be forgotten.
My sincere condolences to Bob's most caring and dedicated wife, Carol, and the entire family. Richard J. Evans

Bob worked out early morning at Mid-Town Athletic Club. I will always remember him flashing that million dollar smile and having fun at whatever he did. Bob and Ken (Reed) depended on each other to maximize their workouts. I think of them as brothers. Rest in peace my friend
