Obituary of Susan H. Horwitz

Susan H. Horwitz Penfield: September 24, 2009 at age 62. She is predeceased by her father, Philip Hillsberg. She is survived by her loving husband of 41 years, Richard J.; devoted children, Rebecca & Jason (Becky); adored grandsons, Jake & Sam; mother, Charlotte Hillsberg; sister, Margie (Tim Moehnke) Wilkov; sister-in-law, Dotty Tulin; nieces and nephews, Jeffrey & Jennifer Wilkov, Mark Tulin & Karen Gillen. Susan had her Doctorate in Family Psychology and was an Associate Professor at the University of Rochester Medical Center. She was a well respected master educator, therapist and researcher who touched the lives of many in our community. Funeral Service will be held Sunday, September 27, 2009 at 1 PM in the Main Sanctuary of Temple Beth El (139 Winton Road S.). Click here for directions to Temple Beth El. Interment, Mt. Horwitz, UR professor, clinician, dies Staff reports • September 30, 2009 Dr. Horwitz was a teacher and clinician of family therapy who studied interventions to prevent domestic violence. A native of Syracuse, Dr. Horwitz taught family therapy theory, research and clinical practice at the UR Medical Center's Family Therapy Training Program since 1988. "She was passionate, and I mean passionate, about helping prevent and treat partner violence through research, clinical work and professional education," said Dr. Susan H. McDaniel, director of UR's Institute for the Family. Dr. Eric Caine, chair of the Department of Psychiatry said: "Susan was a remarkable person, at once warm and nurturing, and wonderfully assertive and self-directed." "Susan supported the use of couples therapy and therapy for perpetrators long before others were willing to acknowledge the often complex and convoluted nature of family violence," Caine said. "She devoted herself to illuminating what others would not see." She also worked as a consultant to courts for custody evaluations and to school districts regarding family issues, learning disabilities and mental health concerns. Dr. Horwitz is survived by her husband, Richard, of Penfield; two children, Rebecca of Rochester and Jason of Boston, Mass.; her mother, Charlotte Hillsberg of Rochester; and numerous relatives.
