Obituary of Robert Elliot Rosenblum

Dr. Robert Elliot Rosenblum, DMD Dr. Robert Elliot Rosenblum, DMD of Rochester, NY, died October 28, 2009. He was a long-time resident of Pittsford and most recently resided at The Gables in Brighton where he was fondly known as Dr. Bob. Born in Manchester, NH to the late Dr. David and Natalie (Goldberg) Rosenblum, Bob was a 1948 Alumnus of Tufts University and Tufts Dental School in 1952. He interrupted his studies to serve in the US Navy from 1945 to1946, specializing in electronics and electronic communications while commissioned in the South Pacific. He received an Asiatic Pacific Area Medal, World War II Victory Metal and an American Area Medal. Following Tuft’s Dental School graduation, he practiced in his father’s Dental office in Manchester NH. He moved to Rochester NY to study Orthodontics at the Eastman Dental School (now called the University of Rochester Eastman Institute for Oral Health), earning his Orthodontic Certification in 1959, and MS in 1961 from the University of Rochester. Upon graduation, he set up a private Orthodontics practice in the Twelve Corners area, followed by a move to Todd Mart Plaza (Winton Place). He also had an office in Bushnell’s Basin and later in Canandaigua, until retiring from in 2001. He was active with several Dental and Orthodontic societies, specifically The Edward H. Angle Society of Orthodontists, The American Association of Orthodontists, the American Dental Association, NYS Dental Association, NYS 7th District Dental Association and Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity. He actively pursued Orthodontic research and was a pioneer in the use of computers to analyze facial relations to assist in treatment. He was a Research Associate and later an Associate Professor at the Eastman Dental Center where he taught on and off from 1959 to 2006 and helped to mentor many students. One of his popular classes was a course on Computer Applications in the field of Orthodontics. In 1993 he was awarded the Angle Research Prize, an award given to outstanding specialized scientific Orthodontic research. Bob was an avid photographer throughout his life. He also enjoyed sailing, rowing, swimming running and biking as well as scuba diving. While growing up in New Hampshire, he was a member of the first generation in this country to take up the sport of downhill skiing, which remained a life-long passion locally, nationally and world-wide. His last ski trip at the age of 79 was to Innsbruck, Austria with his grandson, Harrison. He enjoyed spending time at his family cottage in Northwood, NH. Bob was an active member of the Rochester arts and cultural community. He was a regular patron at the Eastman Theater, and was a member of the George Eastman House, Memorial Art Gallery and Rochester Museum & Science Center among others. In 1953 he married the late Harriet Susskind. They were wed for 49 years until her passing in 2002. He is survived by his three children: Melinda Goldberg (Ron Turk) of Brighton, Mark Rosenblum of Woburn, MA, and Andrea Chasanoff (Marc) of Stamford, CT, and 4 grandchildren; Harrison and Douglas Goldberg and Grace and Claire Chasanoff. The family wishes to thank his fine doctors, the staff of the Jewish Home Transitional Care Program and Lifetime Care Hospice.
