Obituary of Ruth L. Lewis

Lewis, Ruth L. Rochester: Died peacefully at home on September 8, 2007, at age 81. She was predeceased by her parents, Maurice and Mary Lewis brothers, Aaron Lewis and Myron Lewis sisters, Bernice Lewis Relin and Irene Lewis Mitlof dear friend, Mary Mack. Ruth is survived by her brother, Dr. Ephraim Lewis nieces, Elizabeth Lewis (Robert) Abramson, Dr. Bonnie Lewis (Daniel) Pfoutz, Ellen (Jay Golden) Lewis, Karon Lewis, Rabbi Judith (Otto Kucera) Lewis nephews, Leonard Relin and Larry Lewis nine great-nieces and great- nephews, Hannah, Deborah, Michelle, David, Gregory, Daniel, David, Daniel and Benjamin and four great-great-nieces and nephews. Ruth is also survived by Christine and Richard Wildman, their six children and two grandchildren. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 11, 2007 from 1 to 2 PM at Brighton Memorial Chapel, 3325 Winton Rd. South where Services will follow in the Chapel at 2PM. Interment, Mt. Hope Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Maurice and Mary G. Lewis Fund, c/o Jewish Home Foundation, 2021 Winton Road South, Rochester, NY 14618 Ruth was born on April 18, 1926 in Rochester, New York where her parents, Maurice and Mary Lewis owned The Standard Brewing Company, founded in 1889 as an ale brewery. It was originally located at 10 Cataract Street. By the time of prohibition, the brewery's capacity was 30,000 barrels per year. After repeal, Standard reopened at 436 Lake Avenue. Ruth grew up in Rochester, New York, graduated from Rochester General Hospital School of Nursing in 1946 continued her education and graduated from Western Reserve University with a BS in Nursing in 1950. Ruth pursued graduate studies at The University of Buffalo. She had a distinguished and enjoyable career, first with Rochester General Hospital, and then with the Rochester Psychiatric Center where she retired as Chief of Nursing Services and Training in 1981. In addition, Ruth taught nursing at both RGH and RPC throughout her career. Today, she continues to be admired by both her peers and subordinates. Ruth actively enjoyed her retirement traveling and entertaining both friends and family. Ruth's home of 73 years was known a fun destination whether on New Years Eve or on a hot July night, poolside.
