Obituary of Mark Nanos

Mark Nanos Brighton: September 19, 2008 at age 84. Predeceased by his brother, Vladimir & sister, Sonya in Israel. He is survived by his loving wife, Gita Gordina; daughter, Elizabeth (Gregory) Chernyak; grandchildren, Ann & Irene Chernyak; nieces & nephews. Mark was born in the Ukraine and lived there until his family decided to move to the United States. Before the immigration, Mark and his family lived in the beautiful town of Chernigov, about 90 miles east of the capital city of Kiev. In November 1989, Mark along with his wife Gita, daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth & Gregory and their two granddaughters, Ann & Irene came to Rochester, New York. Mark's life was not easy. His father, Solomon Nanos served as an officer in the military. On the first day of World War II, he faced the Germans on Russia's west border. That day he was killed by the Germans. His remains were never found. As the oldest son, Mark was left to look after his mother, his twin sister, Sonya and younger brother, Vladimir. At the tender age of 19, Mark joined the Russian army. As a soldier he too was sent on to fight in the war. He fought until the end of the war in 1945. After the war, Mark went to work in the engineering industry. He remained with the same company for 40 years until his retirement in 1989. The Russian government highly acknowledged Mark for his life long dedication, hard work and participation in World War II.
